Had Spotify for a long time now - not sure I could live without it. However, it does sometimes pose a problem for me - can too much choice be a bad thing? I sometimes find myself slightly overwhelmed with the sheer volume of choice. My way of listening to music has certainly changed with Spotify. I now listen to a more varied background of music, but I listen to specific artists and records a lot less. I tend not to get the rapport with albums, songs or artists - and I'm not sure how I feel about that if you know what I mean?!

I know what you mean but don't have that as a problem because the way I use it is to sample a lot and buy the few that I really like.

I tend to listen to it by album rather than playlists, so it still has that coherent album feel for me. If it's a good album, of course.

Having just upgraded my Raspberry Pi with a HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro, I find myself re-evaluating Spotify yet again. Listening last night, I kept thinking "how can this be a 320k stream over the internet?" Even accepting that Ogg-Vorbis is a better codec than mp3, it still amazes me that it approaches CD quality so closely that on some albums it's damned nearly the same. A while ago I proclaimed that Spotify would only ever be an evaluation system for me to decide which CDs to buy. It's still that, but it's also becoming a primary source for the vast wealth of music out there that I shall never buy. It really is that good, now. jandl100 I really see where you are coming from, now

Yes agreed , it's been a primary source for me for a few years now and sometimes I can't quite believe how good it sounds .

jandl100 I really see where you are coming from now IMO it's always been that good Martin, I've been enjoying good sound from Spotify on my music server for a long time. I reckon you've now got a super little setup with your Pi to actually appreciate it's worth as a music resource

I reckon you've now got a super little setup with your Pi to actually appreciate it's worth as a music resource I'm sure it has, Tim. My previous experiences slowly ramped up from 'facsimile performance but ok' to 'really very acceptable' to now where I think it's a perfectly good primary source. My SACD player still reigns supreme, but it's very much closer now between vinyl, silver disc and Spotify. I can go back to being platform agnostic but with the added benefit of having a vast collection at my disposal!

I have to agree with Tim, when I used Spotify on my previous streamer, the sound was easier on the ear than my streamed music, if a little less detailed. Spotify music quality is quite surprisingly good.

I've done a 3 month free taster with Tidal, a 3 month free trial of Spotify and am now coming to the end of my free one month trial of Qobuz!
Out of the 3, I prefer the Spotify interface.
dCS are due to roll out a free MQA upgrade for my Vivaldi Upsampler and DAC in December.
This may well influence what streaming provider I opt for!

Spotify are supposed to be introducing hi-res streaming so you may want to roll that into the equation.

I can go back to being platform agnostic but with the added benefit of having a vast collection at my disposal! Yup, that's me too - it really is all about the music for me. I also prefer the convenience of a music server as I play music so much, just too much hassle searching for things physically and putting them back again. That's before you even consider the real estate a large collection takes up. Spotify saves me so much money too, avoiding buying the single play albums, of which I have far too many.

I won't give up my physical CD collection and I tend to pounce on CD bargains, but there is a place in my system for both media and streaming.

What a complete dick. All those words and he only has the least worthy take on its purpose, that of wallpaper music.
He totally misses the value of a streaming service with a vast catalogue of available music and features like 'daily mix' that help you discover more of the kind of music you listen to. Probably because he so lacks the imagination to actually appreciate the music he's listening to in the first place.

If the record labels had embraced streaming and file sharing years ago with a system that is fair to both the artist and consumer, instead of trying to kill it off because it was damaging their old business model, perhaps we would be in a different place with all this?

At least Spotify doesn't have such an obvious connection with using music to help the sales of hardware, like Apple and Amazon.
