One thing for sure we all have different musical tastes. sometimes they meet and we can share our enjoyment, other times they are more personal
For me they are certain instruments I really like the tone and timbre: Guitar (electric and acoustic) Violin, Cello, Piano, Bass (i prefer finger playing do not mind people using a pick and usually dislike slap bass with a passion). I dislike Synth keyboards, Harpsichord and elctronic drums. I also often enjoy instruments from other countries so have a liking for more exotic scales.
I would say my musical foundation is very much rock, I can listen to some pretty heavy stuff, but also like Jazz (sorry Jerry someone hear has to like a bit of Jazz), world music, electric and some acoustic blues.
One thing I find interesting is why someone like Chris who I usually have similar taste sometimes we can be so different. For instance Chris has tried to get me into the Grateful Dead and I just do not connect to it, yet I like Phish who are certainly influnced by the band. With styles like progressive rock I like some of it but tends to be more guitar domminated Try as I have I cannot get into ELP. I love the second Yes album Drama and 90125 but the others I find patchy. I love bands like Rush that are certainly influnced by Yes and agree this is not really prog. But its not really hard rock either I also love bands like Dream Theater, been a fan since the first album and seen them about 15 times. Yet I can just as eaisly enjoy someone like Nina when she is on form.
Guitar players is a passion for me
I can enjoy something like Maggot Brain but also enjoy Race with the Devil or even something like Dark Eyes. So enjoy feel players like Jeff Beck who phrases like no one else, to someone like Shawn Lane who could really rip. Drummers vary from the lose feel of Bill Ward to Derron Bell of Power of Omens
But I have no idea why I like what I like. I need to feel a emotional connection to the music. Most of the music is a bit more complex than you standard pop or rock tune.
So why do you like what you like
