The cost is not an issue, but the industry is not settled enough to be buying lifetime licences.

The cost of lifetime membership equates to four years of annual membership. roon is presently sufficiently far ahead of any competition to make that a reasonable gamble IMHO. Also, regarding the cost of hardware to run roon core, it's a damn sight cheaper than buying a new CDP. That was the situation I was in. My heavily tweaked CDP that I had and been very happy with had failed, having recently been subjected to an expensive repair. It was old and I concluded moving to streaming was my best option compared to spending in the thousands for my silver disc collection. The purchase of a Sonic Transport and a microRendu and Roon membership represented a major cost saving with, through Tidal, access to a music library of my dreams. Savings all round for me as I spend less on music now than I did previously. I've not bought any CD's and reserve just a bit for the very occasional purchase of a nice piece of vinyl. An absolute no brainier IMHO.

I do find it quite amusing that people are very happy to pay well over £1000 for a turntable/CD player/Reel to Reel tape deck etc. However apparently $500 is way to much for a lifetime licence for the most innovative Digital replay system devised. That is an excellent point Nick... so much so that I've posted on the Roon forum in an effort to identify a graphic card which not only doesn't suffer the dreaded white minimising screen, but will also plug in and play with my Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H motherboard. The difference in audio has nagged away at me since I tested it and it seems silly for me to be missing out on the improvement

For the cost, I'd have expected it to be easier to set up. SQ is good on first impressions though.

The cost is not an issue, but the industry is not settled enough to be buying lifetime licences. I disagree completely, since I bought my lifetime subscription the Roon programmers have kept up a solid stream of new updates and feature requests. They support up to DSD 512 and 384K playback and up to 32 bit.
I am unsure which part of the ability to playback most, if not all different digital formats you are expecting to change in the future, they are even apparently going to have built in MQA support at some stage (for some unknown reason)
Now if I had just bought a £5000 pound CD player how would that be a more sensible use of money? Which industry is it you are expecting to change?

I am not talking about buying a £5000 CD player, I have one thanks. What I am saying is that the industry for streaming music is in a state of flux and is not yet settled on streaming formats and systems. I have no issue with the value of Roon if it does what it says, but four years is a long time in the industry and it hasn't yet shaken down to the basic survivors. Remember Neil Young and Pono?
Even if I were to invest in it, I think I would keep it to the annual sub to start with.

Yes, sorry, I discounted files and failed to mention them because I'm not interested in file-based playback unless someone can find a replacement for the passion involved in building a physical collection. Each to their own, and I can see that Roon looks great as a file/streaming solution.

Please, please don't mix up Roon and Rune, they are entirely different things. I see we do have what Greg calls a car jack in common in our playback systems

And I think the metadata, artwork and information driven front end of Roon is the closest thing to a physical collection you can get!! After all it was the reason they wrote it in the first place.

Hah, hah! I hadn't clocked it! Nice taste in 'gantries' as Pinkie called it, I think.
