The Pioneer donor has worked out great. When I dismantled it to check the part numbers I could find no overall part number as shown in the manual, so I put it into the Ayre and it plays great.
A little bonus is that the Pioneer remote controls the Ayre just fine. Given that the dreaded "forgot to change the batteries" penalty struck I may need it at some point. I repaired the board in the original remote but don't know if it is a permanent repair or not.
I have the original drive back in for now, with the assurance that there's a spare in the cupboard. I must say the unit I got looked like new inside and out and played really well. It's display is so bright and clear compared to the Ayre that I wish it was transferable. The Pioneer appears to have to be the DV-656A - S (in UK).
