I am another fan of what the Funk F.X does (or should that be doesn't do?). Well worth a listen.

What's wrong with the Stogi Jules? Ha - nothing as far as I know! Just keen to try and understand something about what constitutes good tonearm design...

What's wrong with the Stogi Jules? Chris - does my memory serve me right in thinking that you were selling a Zeta a while back? If so, what did you replace it with?

No, you must be mistaken - I bought myself a second Zeta. You may be thinking of Nigel (vinylspinner) who was selling one a while back. Zeta sales thread

Mines a Fidelity Research FR64s, Silver wired BTW. Their heavy headshell is nice too. Excellent - what were you using before and any chance of a photo of deck and arm in situ? I can put a photo or two up later when on the laptop. Before the FR64, I was using a Rega R200 that I'd made 12", my own 12" homebrew with an SME horizontal bearing, and highest precision dentist drill spec ceramic vertical bearings, another Acos made arm - the Pioneer PL-71 arm, that I also modded to 12", and I auditioned an SME 512. The latter had rather low sound to pound ratio for my ears.
Before all that, I had a fully OL modded RB250.. Luckily I brought that second hand as the new costs are pretty stiff.
Various carts, latterly SPU's hence the 12" and FR64 10" (10" perhaps the best compromise of both worlds?) - SPU wise I'd heard the basic ones but the elliptical and Replikant B stylus cuts are much more me, e.g. Silver Meister (elliptical), but I settled with the Royal N (Replikant B), in the FR64s heavy headshell, where it really sings.

Oh yes! I bought my first one in 1990. That's a special arm as it was one of the first 20 ever made - you can tell them from the gold coloured armtube. I paid £150 for it & put it on an AR Legend and then my Gyro a year or so later. The one I bought a couple of years ago is a little newer and it cost 3 times more - still a good price though! I have always used Koetsu Blacks on them.

Did you say 'gold coloured armtube' Me wants!!! That would look <sick> on my Source, in the style of the original Odyssey tonearms ... bet they are unobtanium in gold now though.

Look at this Source Odyssey arm designed by John Gordon - available for $5,000 I believe from Hong Kong. Just looks so beautifully made … John is a class act. Very nice indeed.

If I were buying again I'd look seriously at a (Syrinx) PU7 from J7 (Audio Origami). Very good value for around £2k for a custom made arm to your spec and finish.

Hehe, already at 12", whilst somethings are interesting, drive and attack are worse than a 9" arm. It's all rather too laid back as you extend things.. To my ears anyway. Going further and further, it can't come back I would imagine, but I've never heard it, so who knows. That chap obviously likes it.

Chris, I *so* nearly got my hands on a black / gold Odyssey arm from John Gordon a few years back … Whether John still has any parts to make them any more I don’t know …
