There was a couple with a baby at the show, which I was surprised to see, especially when they went into one of the louder rooms.

I remember seeing a baby at the Iron Maiden show last year!!!! I've heard of starting them young, but that's ridiculous, even with the best ear protection possible.

Those little BBC FALCON LS3/5a clones were superb . . . The Primare room was also sounding good with those JBL speakers - ugly but great sound Have you seen the power amp driving the LS3/5a - hah! Those JBLs might be ugly (I don't mind them so much) but they make a great sound and suit a lot of Americana and West Coast music.

There was a couple with a baby at the show, which I was surprised to see, especially when they went into one of the louder rooms. Went to a demo evening some years back to hear another Paul's system. Ancient Linn / Naim system sitting on loads of Mana. Isobariks must have been the first pair made. Sounded great. Not long after we got there they put the small kids to bed. Ah. That will bring the volume down a bit, especially as they were in bed in the next room. Nope. Loud volume still. The kids went to sleep so far as I know. Give them normality your style and it is normality

Off to my yearly Dad/Son Hifi day out to the Bristol this year. To be honest, these days we don't really go for the Hifi as the show has been disappointing for the past few years, apart from the odd room.
Hopefully it will be better this year.

Just as the clocks go forward on the last weekend in March, and back the last weekend in October every year, the Bristol Show is always the last weekend of the same month every year. Same as the League Cup Final.

Paul, are there any products you are particularly hoping to listen to? I'd be interested to know what you think of the new Focal and Auralic DACs if you come across them ...

I am up for that. Although I do usually find the bar at the show to be so packed you can't hold a sensible conversation with anyone LOL.

Not sure I am going to be going tomorrow now as I haven't been feeling that well the past couple of days. I'll see how I feel this evening and make a decision later on today.

I've returned from the Bristol Hi-Fi show today. I was mostly underwhelmed with what I heard. Rather than go through every room (I walked out about 20s after entering some), here are a few notes:
The Russell K Red 150Se speakers typified several new launches where it appeared that there was too little speaker for the money at £5999 for a fairly average sound.
For the first time ever I can announce, with some relief, that Chord put on a good show sound with the mScaler and Hugo DAC through B&W 805D3 speakers. That mScaler is definitely worth investigating although it's fairly pricy.
The ATC SCM40 speakers were not bad, streamed music sounded better than CD in their setup. Another surprise as I've never been much impressed with ATC in the past.
The Hegel H590 amp with Dynaudio Confidence 20 speakers sounded poor and quite shouty - this is a repeating pattern in far too many rooms.
The new Fyne Audio F702 speakers sounded harsh with considerable midrange glare
The Acoustic Energy AE509 speakers were not bad at all with punchy bass. Their demonstrator apologised for the poor bass in the room but the reality is that he had accomplished more to get it right than almost any other room. I congratulated him on the sound.
The Von Gaylord pyramidal speakers with valve power were punchy on some jazz but had splashy cymbals, another failure with a harsh room and insufficient treatment.
And so to the new Wilson Benesch P1.0 speakers. Could they turn around a 100% record of horrible sound? Nope, they had terrible glare and were very bright as is usual with this brand. When they are not bright they sound cold and uninvolving.
I have to say something about room setup and make an observation about the attendees. The average age of attendees was probably around 45-50, while the demo staff were probably 25-30. It shows in that fully 2/3 of the rooms were very poorly setup due, I guess, to inexperience. Yes, hotel rooms can be tricky or downright poor. in sound However, if the best I could achieve was some of the sounds I heard, I would close and lock the door and not demonstrate at all. Come on guys, practice setting up in harsh environments and get it better - some of the rooms were an utter embarrassment.
It was nice to catch up with David Brook of MCRU and I did see Dave Cawley of Timestep briefly but when I returned he wasn't there so I couldn't chat.
I was very pleased to see Townshend there and I complimented them on the DCT 300 XLR cables I had recently picked up on eBay for my DAC to preamp run. One thing led to another and they promised to send me a set of single-ended Fractal cables on loan to see if my preamp to power amp run would benefit from more of the same goodness. I look forward to trying them out soon.

Thanks for the write up Martin - looks like a typical show in many ways.
I don't know why some manufacturers bother if they can't show off their kit to its best ability. Certainly experience must play a very big part here.
