Might be an idea to PM Gazjam. As far as I am aware he still builds custom KORUS servers. Factor in the the cost of a tablet or phone for controller and bobs yer aunty.....

Loading time with TRUE memory players can be a sticking point for some people. Using the new Nve 960 to handle an improved data loading / checking phase load time for one of our ultra high resolution files (2GB)is around four seconds and the usual red book size 220Mps would be around 300 milliseconds. Even when crunching the biggest files power consumption is 11.6 watts on the normal red book files 7.4watts using a Skylake CPU. As a famous master of six fingered sting one mentioned it's not all about one millions notes a seconds, music needs to breathe Speed is but a tool, use it correctly and it can help you, use it at the cost of all others and you sound like Yngwie Malmsteen Shed-tastic mate

I use a Gigabyte J1800 motherboard www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4881#ov with 8gb RAM and a monster Super Flower Leadex Gold 750W PSU, which runs without the fan and measures superbly. The motherboard has a built in fanless Celeron chip. Not the smoothest on HD video, but more than enough for audio. I wanted a totally silent, extremely reliable server, and this is it, for under £500 all in. I added an SSD, and the Blu Ray drive uses a SOTM SATA filter. It plugs into a seperate Tacima filtered mains strip. Where I got the biggest gains, as my DAC has no USB input, is via using a Halide Bridge USB to BNC / SPDIF converter with an AQVOX power supply, both of which cost more than my media server.

I would use a NUC if doing it now. Something like a Gigabyte BRIX with i7 processor, 16GB RAM and an NVMe SSD. Intel NUCs are nice, too. Incredibly fast, dead silent, tiny. You could replace the supplied standard power supply with a linear one for the lowest noise.

That sounds like a very good idea

The fanless miniPC I have is pretty much a NUC, it uses the ASUS H110T motherboard.

Really, people are still using normal PC power supplies for a digital transport surely not?
The NUC will get you going, not sure you need an i7 though, think about what you are trying to achieve with it, remember it is not going to be used a normal PC
When down loading files use a dedicated line (preferably not wireless) and low powered PC / laptop that has very little software on it for this you may be surprised at the results. Yes bits are bits blah, blah, blah.

At the moment mostly music and perhaps YouTube and Spotify But not a issue if just using it for BugHead I should be able to get away with i5 as long as it is AVX2

I like the idea of Linear power supply but not sure how confident I would be putting a bare bones unit together
