Nagaoka cartridge and a better phono stage will get you a long way upwards.

Shure m97xe and the audio technica at440mlb spring to mind, around 100 quid, about the limit I would spend on that particular deck. Either would be perfectly good on anything else you upgraded to in the future if you decided to.

James just enjoy another way of listening to music. I bought a rega rp1 during the summer and have really enjoyed buying and listening to vinyl. Its a budget deck(recently updated with the performance pack when the cleaning fairy sent the stylus to vinyl heaven).
I just buy albums that are really special to me(John Martyn mostly!!) listen on cans and love it.
Brian built up a Lenco that is really good for minimal outlay but I didnt have the patience or ability he has. Top notch vinyl is majik BUT digital done well bang for buck is hard to beat.
For the rice krispie effect lidl micro fiber cloths at just over a quid have been a revelation for me in my bum basic set up....just enjoy!!!

Thanks for all the different advice, my first step will be to buy some more records, then complete the phono section in my Colin Wonfor DIY Pre, as Colin really rates it. Then in time swap out the cart for something more appropriate. But as tony said, enjoy the music 👍

Good stuff James. I've put a link to this thread on the TAS Facebook page. Love the photo! I'd really like to see another hi-res shot that takes in the whole amp Wonfor-rack.

Aye , good advice from Tony mate . Buy some LPs and it time you'll realise that this isn't just another way of listening to music . I find I can get '' drawn '' into the music more when I have the time to sit down and listen to vinyl . Your new turntable looks fab BTW .

Nagaoka cartridge and a better phono stage will get you a long way upwards. I must admit, having had carts from the bottom and top of the Nagaoka range, I don't think I could recommend them any more. The treble is too rolled off and smooth. I didn't find this a real problem with classical music but for anything else I feel they are too 'polite' ...

Deliberate recommendation, Jules, because the deck will show up any brightness as harshness.

I'd say that was a "less than ideal" place to perch a turntable.

If you get serious with the TT I recommend a good wall shelf or at least isolate it better; as the last two posts say not ideal where it is located James

Okay I've had this turntable for some time now and as I have not had a digital front end I've been listening to the turntable quite a lot . I'm still not attracted to the sound it gives . I know I'm asking a huge amount from an entry-level turntable but it doesn't even give me a taste of anything I like. So I'll probably end my turntable journey there. I'm sure a top-flight turntable would sound wonderful in my system and I got this turntable for free so there's no problems , so as I've said before if anyone is passing Maidstone with a nice turntable Pop in. On the other hand I keep on looking at examples of older turntables and this one looks like an absolute stunner theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?50560-Telefunken-S600-turntable-with-AS212-tonearm

Its a shame that I don't drive James because despite it being far from a "top-flight" turntable, I'd be around to you in a shot with the TD125 seen below so that I could slot it into your excellent system
I was very much in the same boat as you and its taken me three different turntables to get where I am today and be happy with the sound vinyl produces. Even with a record cleaner though, it can still be a very fussy medium to use and buying second hand vinyl is still very much a minefield. But when vinyl reproduction is good, its a joy to behold and that is from somebody who still embraces CD's and primarily downloads high-res 24/96 or 24/192 flac downloads. If your ever passing by junction 6 on the M25, drop me a message here and your more than welcome to pop up and hear vinyl in my system.
Cheers Pete

That Thorens looks absolutely gorgeous - I can see a Hana SL and is that a Jelco with an extra weight on?
