1966 - The Mothers of Invention - 'Freak Out' Why is it not considered (by those who like to stick things into genres) to be prog? Look at the ingredients: Guitars, keyboards, cellos, wind and reed instruments, masses of percussion A fusing of loads of musical styles - rock, blues, doo-wop, soul, classical... Music inspired by avant-garde classical composers Musique concrète, dissonance, unconventional and changing time signatures, studio effects A double concept album with no intention to release singles While we're at it, it was the first double album in popular music and the first concept album. Nop. Prog was an English invention, People can argue with me till they are blue in the face & come up with Band examples all they want. I will never buy any of it. Of course, I knew you would say something like that!

If you like Affinity you will like the Spanish Maquina 'Why? album.. I certainly do like Maquina. Some really great playing on that album - love the crazy guitar and drumming on 'Why' ... It goes onto my wishlist though best I'll be hoping for is one of the recent represses ...

I'm also rather taken with the Julian's Treatment album.
The sci-fi lyrics won't be to everyone's taste but since the dude behind it, Julian Jay Savarin, went on to become a sci-fi author it's understandable!
Lots of interesting music though and another strong female lead vocal.

Lots of interesting music though and another strong female lead vocal. The Vocalist on 'A time Before This' was Cathy Purden she was an ozzy singer. On Savarins 'Waiters On The Dance' Album the singer was Jo Meek, sister to Anna Meek from Catapilla, however Jo Meek was actually the original Catapilla singer but was replace very early on with her sister..

I thought Earth and Fire 'Carnaval ...' was excellent.
'Atlantis' doesn't do it for me though - there is some nice music in parts but the lyrics to the title track are pretty embarrassing at times ...

The first lp is good too.
It seems Akarma records are responsible for a number of Prog re-releases but from what I read the sq can be very variable so most likely just ripped from cd. I'm going to pick stuff up from Repertoire as they do a very good job indeed...

The first album is a crossover prog album. The south Korean LP Issue on Si-Wan was a good Re-issue.It was a die-cut sleeve like the original too. I think Music on Vinyl did a coloured Re-issue but did not have the Roger Dean sleeve.

I've never really listened to Rare Bird, but I like what I'm hearing.

Any excuse to play what is a bit of my youth is fine for me. I loved this track, but for ages I thought they had two lead singers.
