This is a whole new world of music for me to discover.
Back in the 80's when I was listening to metal I assumed that all prog bands sounded like early Genesis and so avoided like the plague!!

There is literally hundred of Obscure prog bands that people wont have heard of from the late 60's/early 70's.
That is the thing with the Common Garden/Sucessful Prog bands, Everyone thinks that is the be & end all of Prog.
There was in excess of 500 Prog bands from Italy in the first half of the 70's alone.

The thing with prog it it went thru stages. The early stuff was the transition from Psychedelic Rock [Crossover Prog] within one year or so most bands but not all were really finding their feet moving forward, some were still in that transition period, a lot packed up early doors. By 1973, Prog was really advancing, Stages antics, £25,000 spinning drum kits, £5,000 persian carpets to stand on, mountains of Keyboards etc hence the term Art Rock, cos the stage was a very very important vehicle for the bands performance. By 1974 all was at an end imho. The remainder were still making music but flamboyant stage shows were stripped away, Technical Time signatures were simplified, it was not what it was, times were changing as was the music.
An example of the transition stages take YES debut album, then try 'Fragile YES' & then 'Tales From Topographic Oceans. Those three albums are a prime example as to Prog style changing over a period of 4 years.

1966 - The Mothers of Invention - 'Freak Out' Why is it not considered (by those who like to stick things into genres) to be prog?
Look at the ingredients: Guitars, keyboards, cellos, wind and reed instruments, masses of percussion A fusing of loads of musical styles - rock, blues, doo-wop, soul, classical... Music inspired by avant-garde classical composers Musique concrète, dissonance, unconventional and changing time signatures, studio effects A double concept album with no intention to release singles While we're at it, it was the first double album in popular music and the first concept album.

The concept album finds it roots all the way back in the 50s, but agree Zappa and the Beatles really push this forward. I guess the issue with Zappa is that it might be considered a bit out there as the man himself might put it. In England the Moody Blues and Procol Harlem are part of its early foundations. Along with a variety of English folk, classical music and Psychedelic rock (sorry Chris hard to do this without genres) I usually see King Crimson as the first. Just listen to how tight they were.

What about Australian Prog? I've got a double album of it called Golden Miles - Australian Progressive Rock 1969 - 1974. Interesting stuff, if a little derivative. Probably more Psychedelia than Prog mostly, but fun all the same.

Nop. Prog was an English invention, People can argue with me till they are blue in the face & come up with Band examples all they want. I will never buy any of it.

I usually see King Crimson as the first. Just listen to how tight they were. The Nice 'The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack' 1967 Has some Proggy aspects to it, but more so the 2nd album 'Ars Longa Vita Brevis' 1968
