No-one would deny that you like what you like Andre but you have to accept that other people have a different perspective.
Look at my relationship with FZ's music. Try to stick it in a pigeonhole - you can't, it's just not possible. I like all of it - OK, some of it I like less, and some more. The first Zappa album I heard was 'Apostrophe' (a straight rock album with a humorous theme) and I loved every note of it.
Typical track....
Contrast that with 'The Yellow Shark' (skip to about 16'00" for example).....
And then listen to 'Cruisin' With Ruben & the Jets'.....
I don't think you could find three more different pieces of music by the same artist. I like them all and it doesn't matter that it could be a different band - (it usually was!). If you like it, then you like it. Why should a person's taste be defined by a set of principles? I like to eat rump steak but that doesn't stop me liking a bacon sandwich, or peas, or an apple.

André
I largely disagree with your comment about Progressive Rock being a style - it's more of an attitude, and of reaching out and stretching musically. And that attitude is very much alive and well today. Change is an integral and inevitable part of that attitude.
I'm pleased that there are bands out there that grow and change with each album - it would be awful if they didn't grow and change and became a sad parody of themselves. That would be death by self inflicted tedium.

I have little time for fashion. To me, good music is good music and remains good. I don't get bored with it. Should I consign Mahler or Shostakovich to the bin because they're a bit old and out of fashion? What about Barclay James Harvest or Hawkwind or PFM?
Saying that, I do agree that musicians often struggle to maintain their high water mark across the years - Chris's example of Zappa being the exception that proves the rule. So bands have peaks and troughs and we all like discovering a little known treat on occasion, something that took its time to shine. For me, a current band can be progressive, too. Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree and The Rome Pro(G)ject are three that have the sound of Prog but are way outside of your defined dates.
By the way, wasn't Prog well adopted in Japan and Italy among other places?

Why is it called Prog / progressive anyway?
What was progressive about that particular music penned in 1969-72 (but definitely not 73)?
I'm just curious about the history of the genre.

There used to be Classical Pop Jazz Blues Rock n' roll which seems to have become Rock then Progressive Rock which was Rock with twiddly bits. Then the genres really started expanding to what we have today. Titles are useful to give an indicator as to roughly what the music sounds like. Unfortunately the biggest genre is Crap which seems to have many types of music attached. Finding the good stuff has always been less than straightforward Listening to Cream - Live today Is that Prog, Blues, Rock a.n.other ? Perhaps all. I love the album

This is exactly why i dissect bands discography to suit. Blimey I'm still I still make my mind whether to place Mike Oldfield under M or O .

I think the best example is Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973). Over-long with lots of meandering, not a patch on Fragile (1971), for instance.

Everything is IMO!
The thing is, I realised after making that post, that Relayer is absolutely bloody epic and it came after TFTO (1974).

I don't like Relayer , that album is when they try to be a bit too clever , a bit classical ? A watershed for the band I think , an end of an era , their Prog era but three years later and bang ! Ok its commercial but Going for the One was a great album , never did reach those heights again on record , IMO

For me, Relayer is a bit like Brain Salad Surgery (1973). Both classically derived, on an epic scale and musically complex. I love them both, don't care that they came at the end of an era.

Yes I like BSS , Jesusalem was always a favourite hymn of mine and ELP my fav band at the time , I couldn't believe it when they recorded it , I played it over and over again. If I have have one gripe with ELP I never liked their couple of whimsical tracks they put on albums , Are You Ready Eddy , The Sherriff etc Edit : I had Jerusalem as the main hymn at my wedding
