I managed to bag one of the legendary Ken-Rad black glass 6SN7's at a very advantageous price - the problem is going to be finding another one without spending £50 or so that they habitually go for ... These tubes are reputed to have the best bass of any 6SN7. Ah, now that is an interesting statement! I've previously owned a KenRad black glass 6SN7 expecting great things based on its high reputation, and I wasn't impressed at all. But that last sentence may indicate why - I am about as far from being a bass-head as you can get. Great bass is great, but is low down on my priorities. If the mids don't sing, then it ain't my thing! I await your findings with high curiosity. Jerry - I'm thinking about buying a TAD GZ34 to complete an all TAD set-up in my pre. Would be interesting to compare to my vintage Toshiba and they can be bought for around £20 so not much to lose!

Sounds like a good plan to me! If I were valving these days TADs would always be my first port of call.

Got one ordered ... Have put the TAD 6SN7's back in for today's listening session to see if they bring back the musical information I thought I was missing yesterday with the vintage Tung-Sol ...

I have decided that these will be my next speakers, with custom built cabs built to manufacturer specs ... Coral Beta 10.

A "full range" single driver?
Coo. How tastes differ!
Good luck with them - they look an exciting project.

Jules Have you heard this type of driver as they something you will either love or hate. I not heard this driver but often find this arrangement to be a bit too harsh for me, they will do somethings really well (coherence) and if you can live with their quirks could be the ideal speaker for you. My advice would be to listen to a pair first before you commit

Aye, for me single driver speakers are a mix of strong pluses and minuses. I prefer a more evenly balanced set of virtues - but the clarity and purity of a good single driver speaker can be quite exceptional. Shame about the tonal unevenness, resonances and colourations! That central cone looks too much like a dreaded Lowther whizzer to me. Get an extended dem (an hour or more) and see/hear what you think then.

Yes, those kinds of driver with a central horn can make the midrange very 'cuppy'.

Points taken on board guys! No chance of a demo as these are vintage items … They do carry a *very* lofty reputation indeed. Here’s a shot with the super tweeter …

Whizzer and Chips. A classic combination. Classic indeed. And Beezer.

I've no idea how they 'sound' yet but loving the look of my new Super Pods courtesy of Mike - very purposeful!

Deck on RDC on a platform on Sorbothane should sound good. Does for me !

The feet are original as supplied with the deck - can't be bothered to tinker with these, partly because the deck is so damn heavy!

That's almost exactly my setup - deck on RDCs into cone cups on Electric Beach S1NX on sorbothane pucks on the rack. It's the best I've found for great isolation from feedback and good sound.

Got a tube question for you guys. I was just looking at one of my unused tubes and when I picked it up I heard a slight rattle. Holding it up to the light and moving it around I can see some kind of very small loose fragment inside. Not sure whether it is worth risking trying in my preamp - would you suggest it could potentially do some harm? Wish I spotted this when I bought it ...

Not just a.... fragment of your imagination, is it?😀

Just a fragment of glass left over from manufacture most likely. Not uncommon.
