I present to you … an empty rack!
Waiting to be filled by a new pre-amp and power amp - my first major component changes / experiments for some time …
So I thought now would be a good time to start some kind of a record / blog on my system changes, so here it is.
For some time my system has been relatively unchanged and very satisfying …
MRM Source turntable
Kuzma Stogi tonearm
Audio Technica AT33 PTG/II
Fidelity Research FRT-3 SUT
Conrad Johnson EV1 phono stage (lots of tube rolling required to get this showing its true potential)
Consonance R150 integrated hybrid amplifier
Shanling CD-S 100 mk II (very capable spinner bought to replace my Consonance CD-120L which awaits repair - not sure which I’ll keep when I finally get the 120 fixed)
Onkyo Integra TA-6711 tape deck
Toshiba ST-420 tuner
Tannoy Chatsworths & 12” HPDs
The R150 is a great integrated but I had my head turned by a pre I noticed for sale and made an impulse purchase.
I'm wondering if I might get just a bit more bass grip with the HPD’s - I’ve no idea if it’s going to work out but should be fun I hope …
What wasn’t so fun was taking most of the components off the rack, adding another shelf and then re-arranging and cabling - really worked up a sweat doing this.
At least I don't have a job like Martin has on his hands though ...
Redoing all the interconnects is always such a pain, especially when you have several of the locking variety which don’t always undo as easily as they should ...
Was a good opportunity to give all the components and rack a good dusting though.
Immense credit due to my long suffering wife - I did this re-jig in the evening whilst she was watching Bake-Off and she hardly batted an eye lid as I erected the Tower of Babel!
The rack is now, er, rather tall with six shelves and the tape deck sitting on a storage unit along side … The combination of new gear and bigger rack would doubtless be grounds for divorce for some - I’m very lucky all my messing around with gear over the years has always been kindly tolerated.
I’ve bought another of the excellent Supra EFF cables to hook up pre and power and am now just awaiting delivery of the power amp.
All will be revealed once it arrives - I’m strangely superstitious about revealing the new gear before they are doing their thing - excuse the eccentricity please!
I’ll post pics of the new gear as they arrive, hopefully next week.
