I agree with Martin on C-RAP. But most modern stuff, hip-hop,house,garage,Indie,grunge etc drives me mad. I'd rather listen to Des O'Connor, and yes, I do have a CD of his.
I prefer melody to boom and crash, especially classical and easy listening. Not keen on most opera, like some Jazz.
I suppose "eclectic" sums up my taste, I like what I like.

Most genres have some exceptions to prove the rule I think Of course. In opera, I do quite like Carmen, and some of the overtures and duets are quite tasty. However, four hours of Wagner's Die Meistersingers is quite beyond my scope of enjoyment!

OK Time to join Slinger in defence of Opera, and not just because I am married to a classically trained Soprano, but because the human voice is an incredible and beautiful instrument. And Choral work. I have few music forms I reliably dislike completely - in the right context I can enjoy many sorts. Rap, mostly leaves me cold. I'm not a big fan of bland wallpaper pop. I prefer live and real (not music industry packaging). I was about to say I could probably add country and western to the list, but I bet if I were in the right part of the US of A, in the right atmosphere, done right I could get into that As a suggestion - try a Dolly Parton cover (Rhiannon Giddens is a classically trained singer) I'll leave Opera for a moment, but it is a taste worth acquiring. I remember an uncle on my Mums side of the family, David Daiches, who wrote a guide to Scotch Whisky , introducing me to single malts, and in particular, corny, but still my favourite, McCallan 18 year old. I tried explaining to my Dad how he was missing out, and it was an acquired taste. His response - "Why would I want to acquire a taste for vitriol?" Anyway - Carmen is definitely a good starter. I watched one version in a huge arena with a dozen or more real horses. Mug up on the plot and libretto and WATCH it - it is visual theatre. Don't start out with a record of La Boheme, which is notably short on arias. As for choral - turn off the lights, or shut your eyes - ideally find a good live performance at a church or cathedral with a good acoustic, and try the Son of God Mass, by my friend and client - James Whitbourn As , Professor Trelawney had it in Harry Potter - "Broaden your minds" (The CD is a better treat musically, with a good system)

I love choral music. It's nothing like opera or musicals to me.
And I'm not even religious!

Almost all rap. Just put a 'c' in front of it to gain my definition. Anything by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Also, despite my love of classical music, I don't like much opera. For the same reason, I detest musicals. I'm with you on that - they just seem so 'artificial' having people bouncing around singing things they could more easily just have said ! In similar vein I don't like any of the 'shouters' - i.e. the idea that if you sing something loud enough it will sound good however rubbish the tune or the lyrics. Not that keen on Jazz either - I can listen for a short while but then it gets on my wick... what a Philistine !

There's a huge difference between Miles Davis' Kind of Blue (wonderful) or Oscar Peterson era jazz, and hard bop which I cannot listen to.

Now you are talking.
I love A capella, Welsh male voice choirs, Russian choirs, Barber shop (even Sweet Adelines),and all things choral.
As to Jazz, A kind of Blue and Acker Bilk are OK.

I like most music but I cannot stand Thrash Metal or antyhing where someone is screaming down a microphone to a noise with no melody... really annoys me that one.
Apart from that, I am not a massive fan of Trad Jazz (although some can be good) and whilst I do like Classical and Opera, I only like specifics, I am not fond of it all... Choral music again is the same, some is ok other not so much.

Without trying to upset anyone who thought he was great, I would like to hesitantly suggest that I did not like the music of Max Bygraves.

I've never got "upset" because anyone did not like something I did.
If others have bad taste that is their problem.

Not a big fan of musicals, rap or quite a lot of jazz - that "experimental" stuff isn't for me. Opera isn't my thing either and I'm not a big heavy metal fan.
