Anyone knows how it compares to the re-clocking circuit in the Caiman SEG? Sorry, no, I was tempted to try the SEG just before I fitted the Kali. But figured after hearing the Kali that I could do without another box in the system so stuck with it.

I love the reclocking in the SEG, it sounds marvellous.

I love the reclocking in the SEG, it sounds marvellous. Is there a mode setting which should be best to take advantage of the internal reclocking?

From memory, Mode 4 is best but please check with Stan as the SEG manual contains the information on what each mode does.

I've just come across a new Raspberry Pi DAC daughter board which seems worth investigation... volumio.org/allo-boss-dac-available-volumio/The Allo Boss DAC reviewed at Volumio. While I've not heard it, Allo's efforts seem to be focused in the areas of clock separation / jitter control and power supply separation which makes sense to me. Probably worth further investigation for 55 Euro Cheers Sean

Thanks for pointing it out Sean. Are you going to give it a go?

I might well do, I have a spare Pi3 which I've been using for Kodi experiments which I could redeploy... I've not researched this product at all yet, but at 55 Euro, superficially is tackles some of the things I've been meaning to change with my Hifiberry boards (DAC+ Pro and Digi+) (power supply mods). My only slight hesitation is that I'm not convinced that currently, either of my systems is good enough to really benefit from the potential improvements.
I think with these kinds of prices, one could happy swap DAC boards every 12-18 months or so, since the improvements in this area are potentially quite large
Cheers

That's interesting, Sean. I would love to compare it with the Digi+ feeding the Caiman SEG, which also features heavy re-clocking algorithms and sounds superb.

Martin,
I can see two related ideas, I'm happy to do the donkey work and assemble a Pi3 and this DAC (and others). I've never had exposure to anything but carefully selected budget kit. Firstly, I could take you up on your kind invite to your new place. Secondly, I could take it along to the Southern meet (I need to check dates).
Cheers

I have ordered the Allo Boss DAC discussed above. It should be here in 5-7 days and was ordered via Volumio (Europe). It will be nailed to a spare Raspberry Pi3. I need to give some thought to the power supplies. Probably battery. In the immediate term, it will probably have to run the latest version of Volumio. and will replace a Pi2 / HifiBerry DAC+ Pro which is running the latest version of Moode audio. I should be able to run the two systems side by side feeding different inputs on the same amp/speakers. I will report back ASAP.

Interesting, Sean. I think you'll have to bring it over when you have it running, I'd love to compare it with the HifiBerry Digi+ running into the Caiman SEG.

agreed, I will keep you posted. It's unlikely to have a box anytime soon!

OK, the Allo Boss DAC arrived yesterday. It took me about 30mins to nail it to a spare Pi 3 and install Volumio v2.118 It all worked straight out of the box as expected without a glitch. Sonically, my first impressions are very pleasing: Increased separation between channels, clearer separation between instruments. Acoustic guitars are particularly noticeable, clear distinction between up and down strums and imperfections and unevenness of the strings being struck. There are lots of little twiddly guitar bits: odd notes, I'd not noticed before.... There is also increased oomph and urgency to percussion. Obviously early days, but I'm pleased.
This has just been thrown together, and ultimately, I need to use a separate power supply for the DAC/Analogue/Audio part. Also, I need to take Martin T up on his kind invite.
Cheers
Sean
