And one for DQ. What's the similarity between a drummer and a philosopher? They both perceive time as an abstract concept

The only one I have ever seriously and repeatedly listened to is on Mountain Jam from the Allman Brothers' Fillmore East recordings. Actually, a drum duet by Butch Trucks and J. Johnny Johnson. Maybe it's their interplay that makes it interesting to me. That and the anticipation of waiting for Duane's guitar solo, which has been giving me goosebumps since 1971.

My dislike of drum solos made me come out in a rash when I saw this photo of Terry Bozzio's kit. The pedals.....

Whilst big wanky drum solos are tedious for me, drum breaks are critical. 6 seconds of an old James Brown or Winstons break can be found sampled in loads of hip hop etc. Far more interesting. Listen to "Tighten Up" by James Brown for a great example of this.

Using the guitar as a percussion instrument can be great
... as can using feet, hands & table tops

If you have the right system to reproduce a fine drum solo then yes they are a good listen occassionally.

If you want a great drum record, it's hard to beat the Kodo Heartbeat Drummers of Japan.

In this instance, I'd say DEFINITELY. Without one, it wouldn't have become the enduring hit it has become. It did actually knock The Beatles's 'Something' off the the American No 1 chart position in 1969 - and without a guitar or bass! A piano, organ, vibes, drums, including a drum loop, and the vocals of the 3 writers is all there is. Gary De Carlo who did the lead vocal and co-writer, sadly died earlier this year at 75:

I always thought Ginger Baker was a particularly musical drummer.

I always thought Ginger Baker was a particularly musical drummer. I had a couple of International Musician magazines from the early 70's, i remember an interview where he had a very big interest in African style drumming

Keith Moon was another unique drummer, as was John Bonham. They were both critical to their bands' sound.

Johnny Ball was on Radio 4 on Saturday giving his Inheritance Tracks. Before taking up teaching he was a drummer in the band Rory Storm & The Hurricanes. He mentioned his time with them in Germany when The Beatles were also there.
