It's not ideal. What's the amp and is the hum there when you have any particular input selected, or just one in particular?

First, disconnect all inputs and check that the amp is earthed. Try the volume on CD input with no connections - you shouldn't get much if any hum. Now connect the CD player (with the volume down). Try again - any hum? Go through the inputs systematically. What do you find?

Hi danielboone
It's apparent that you have a problem. Reading the thread has left me completely confused as to what is causing your problem. Can we go back to the beginning?
Which source are you using when you get the hum?

sorry for the confusion,Stratmanghler . All the following is when using the Michell gyrodec turntable . i have the mitchell psu connected to mitchell gyrodec se table . the phono cables into dino 3 which feeds the amp Music fidelity . WHEN amp is set to aux in and signal fro dino3 inserted there is a hum from amp when turned on and volume is set about 10 o'clock on vol dial. This increases as vol is increased.i`m sure it`s only through the input where the t/t signal is fed . i`m going to start again and test inputs as suggested . thanks

Have you tried plugging another source into the input and have you tried connecting the dino into another input? What's the arm and is it connected to earth?

What happens if you connect a CD player to the AUX input?

Take your time and be methodical. It's the best way to track down the source of the problem.

How Old is the amp? If it hums on all Input selections maybe it's a Power supply Reservoir cap or a coupling cap

Well i have done all tests mentioned and more . The int amp inputs are all silent except when i feed one with leads from phono stage . Changed over to amp (music fidelitya3) putting rca leads from mitchell gyrodec into phono and the humming is still there . changed the original psu to gyrodec and feeding into phono input on amp still gives hum . So it seemed to me the problem maybe tone arm, cartridge . i touched the chassis with one hand and the bearing nut on tonearm with the other hand and it made the noise disappear . Any suggestions what to do next as i`m sure that suggests an earthing problem between chassis and tonearm though original earth strap is still fitted .thanks

Is it a Rega arm without an earth lead?

Have you tried moving the phono stage around?

Have you got an earthing post on the amplifier? If so try connecting a wire between the phono stage earth point and the amplifier earth post.

i`ve taken the phono stage out of the equation at the moment . i am using the MUSIC FIDELITY AC3amps phono input .With the resulting same hum . As i said ion my previous post placing a finger of left hand onto Rega arm axis nut and a finger of the right hand onto the chassis makes the hum go away.
