There was just a piece on Radio 4's Today programme presented by David Hepworth about his view that 1971 was the best year in music. For me, it would be hard to choose from any of the years between 1967 and 1973. What do you reckon?

1973, I think, but I would need to research the exact year of release of my favourite albums.

A major blot on the copybook of 1973 is that it was the year Showaddywaddy were formed. That's bad....very, very bad!

I fondly remember '73 , my two favourite bands ELP and Genesis where at the creative best plus DSOTM was released but 1991 was a great year for me when I bought the following albums :
Pearl Jam - Ten U2 - Achtung Baby Nirvana - Nevermind Metallica - Metallica RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik REM - Out of Time G'N'Rs - Use your Illussion I & II Primal Scream - Screamadelica
A very productive year after the doldrums of the 80's.

Oh dear I think 1973 was the year that things started to go downhill or could be 74. Start of Disco and glam rock got really silly. A lot of lightweight tasteless pop. Still a lot of good albums but I would agree with 1971. 1971 is packed with great rock album releases including my favourite - Who's Next - but then 1973 has Quadrophenia!

Still a lot of good albums but I would agree with 1971. Hmm, you make a good point, what with Joplin's Pearl, Crosby's If I Could Only Remember my Name, Tull's Aqualung, Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate, Sabbath's Master of Reality, ELP's Tarkus etc. etc. Who's Next - wow!

I would suggest 1971-1974 sure did produce some real timeless music

I'll go with that - good commercial stuff like Beatles and Stones, plus 'interesting' music like Pink Floyd, Who, Deep Purple...

Mmm, that's quite a list. I hadn't noticed Hunky Dory in there, too.

Surprising for me. I only have 14 of those. Most of the rest I would not even sample
No Audience, Beach Boys (!), Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Caravan, Colosseum, Country Joe, ELO, Fairport, Family Gentle Giant, Peter Hammill, James Gang, Mahavishnu (!), King Crimson, Wishbone Ash.............
