February's album choice is Musical Evenings with the Captain and is selected by Lawrence aka losenotaminute
My classical album choice is (hopefully) something nobody else has listened to yet, and features chamber music played by Philharmonia Virtuosi. The album was published by ESS.A.Y Recordings in 1996.
I was sent a sample copy of the the cd when it was first released as I'm a fan of Patrick O'Brian's Napoleonic era historical novel series based on a British naval captain and his friend who travels as ship's surgeon. I play this album regularly, especially when I want to relax and return to civilisation. The first book in the series is 'Master and Commander', which was the name of the 2003 film (loosely based on the 10th book Fars Side of the World) by 20th Centruy Fox starring Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey. Both main characters are music fans, scraping away on violin and 'cello to while away the evenings at sea.
My album choice is a selction of chamber music either mentioned in the 20 book series, or contemporary with the period. There are a selection of tracks by well know composers like Handel and Haydn and a few by slightly less well know composers such as Locatelli and Leclair. The mix is very pleasing, but what makes this album is the playing by first violin, Mela Tenenbaum, which in my humble opinion is outstanding. You get the idea straight from the opening notes.
I hope you enjoy it and look forward to hearing what you think.
