I'm trying a cheap top loading CD player, a Sony Playstation 1.
This is a bog standard one I had stashed away. Sounds more than OK.
I have also got a modified one with an SPDIF output from the "chip", but that did not sound too good to my old ears.

picked this up at the weekend philips cd160, part of a complete 80s midi system comprising of a marantz reciever, sony speakers, marantz tape deck and an acoustic solutions turntable. bought the lot for 25 quid, partly for the cd player, and partly because my 10 year old daughter wants a little music system for her bedroom. she has a penchant for muse and feeder....... not sure i will give her the turntable although she wants it, and i had a sony cdp somethingorother in a cupboard she can use for the cds. saw the model number, thought tda1541 and decided to have it. 80stastic!

They were great those old Philips machines. I bought a Mission 'DAD7000R'[Philips CD104] when it first came out in the 80's, used it for years..I think the 'CD-160' has a digital output. Great for hooking straight up to say a Mini disc player.

Yep it has a coax output though it seems a shame to bypass the tda dac chip with the beresford I use for the mac mini. The overall condition of it is fantastic, there isn't a mark on it. Only thing it wants is a bit of lubrication on the transport top clamp as its abit squeaky after all these years I had a meridian mcd that was a lovely thing with the tda1540. My mother in law still has a Philips cd 303 that I covet. Borrowed it a few years ago and wanted to keep it!

This oddity tickled my fancy recently on eBay, its a 1992 era Roksan ROK-DP1 transport, along with the ROK-DA1 DAc and its ROK-DP1 PSU. It was listed as not tested/spares/repair but luckily enough it was a simple perished CD belt which cost a couple of quid via eBay and was easy to replace myself. For those interested, here are some extra shots of the transport innards taken as part of the belt replacement. Quite minimal for a £1K CD transport: Seems the DP1 transport sold for around £995 with the DA1 DAC and DP1 PSU an extra £450 each, so I had David @ MCRU make me up a three pin power DIN lead and sourced a remote from the US. A positive periodl review for the setup can be found via the link below: www.paulburt.co.uk/pdf/DP1_DA1_review.pdfIt certainly has a warm but very engaging sound... especially when compared to my usual Primare CD31

Minimal? Did they forget to put the rest of it in the case?? Great looks!

I agree Jules, there's minimal and then there's minimal. The weight of the unit belies the sparseness of its innards, but when fed into my Chord TT DAC, it sounds very nice indeed. One annoying fault though, there's a nasty audible speaker buzz when its connected via the coaxial out, but fortunately it also has an optical out which functions flawlessly. The guys at Roksan have been great with their help thus far, so I'm hoping they'll have a suggestion and fix for what's causing this...

Probably an earth loop. Use an isolating transformer for the co-ax connection, or just stick with optical.

I always thought that was a great design for a CD transport. The nicest looking thing Roksan made, I reckon. I see you also have an LFD MC1. I do too, although mine has the corian faceplate.

Probably an earth loop. Use an isolating transformer for the co-ax connection, or just stick with optical. It does sound very good via the optical Martin, but it also came with a ROK-DA1 DAC (and DS1 PSU) and that only has a coax input, so I'm keen to try and get it sorted. Short term, does anybody have any suggestions/links for an isolating transformer? I always thought that was a great design for a CD transport. The nicest looking thing Roksan made, I reckon. It must be one of the most none CD looking CD players ever to be produced, one review I've read called it radical Dan Dare/Eagle retro styling and I couldn't put that any better myself

Yes, it's the 'airlock door' that does it for me!

Short term, does anybody have any suggestions/links for an isolating transformer? One of these could be neatly soldered in behind the co-ax socket of the transport.

Yes, it's the 'airlock door' that does it for me! I know what you mean... but it makes a hell of a racket and is raised/lowered by a servo, similar to those found in remote control cars! Short term, does anybody have any suggestions/links for an isolating transformer? One of these could be neatly soldered in behind the co-ax socket of the transport. Thanks Martin... I'll see what the chaps at Roksan have to say first, but I'll look at this as an option if all else fails

My Arcam FMJ CD17 and IrDAC ii. Needs dusting but one of the nicest sounding players I've owned. Built like a tank, decent torrid transformer, solid feel to the whole mechanism.
