The superb Mike New bearing for the Technics SL-1210 has come to the end of its run. Mike tells me he has very few left and then that will be it, production terminated. If you want one then I suggest you contact him right now or they'll be gone forever. Mike New Audio

Hi Folks, Being a new member here I am not sure what licence I have to talk about my upgrades in the non-trade threads. So at this stage I will just confirm what Martin has said. I am still receiving enquiries at about one per week but they do not graduate into a purchase. I need to order and pay for a minimum batch of 25 precision shafts which must be produced on expensive high precision lathes and spindle grinders, so for the activity to be even partially commercial, I need to get a few sales per month.

We don't have any trade threads, Mike. Since I've raised the subject, you're welcome to respond with any info you care to give on the bearing. I'd also like to hear about anything else you're developing?

Sad news re the bearing. I have one in one of my two 1210s and - given the very obvious improvement (easier to gauge when you have two decks) - always figured I'd get one for the other one at some point, once funds permitted, but I guess that's unlikely to happen now. Welcome to TAS Mike

If I didn't already have one I'd be buying one before they are all gone

I just fitted one to my mk 5 this morning and wow!
Sounded so much better, bass was improved, the detail was much improved, a very worthy upgrade.
Mike.

It never ceases to puzzle me, Of all the thousands of SL1200 owners that must be still out there, and who must be still using their TTs to play serious music, Only a few hundred have taken up the opportunity to seriously improve the sonics. In spite of many thousands of visitors to the various web sites on the subject. Or is it a sad fact that only a very few of us now actually use them for playing records.

I can't speak for others but I bought a bearing relatively early in my Technics journey. The upgrade takes it to a different level so it was an obvious purchase for me.

I bought my techie about Xmas time and the first upgrade I bought was a s/h MN Bearing, I love the convenience of my Pi system, but every time I put on an LP, I smile, it sounds great, looks great when playing and just reminds me of so many good times growing up in the 70's buying vinyl every other week.

Hi folks, I have just received an order for 2 complete sets of upgrades (bearing, Base Plate and ETP Platter)from a guy in Broadway NY and so this now leaves only one Bearing available. There has been a sudden increase in interest so If I can obtain 15 deposits as I have done in the past then maybe it might be economic to produce another batch of 25. If not then whoever gets the last one will be the last one!!.

It will be a shame if the Mike New bearing is not available in future, as this will limit the choice to the Timestep, Inspire HiFi, IanMac and the rather lovely Spin from the Funk Firm.

You are correct Wonky! After all those me-too suppliers who followed in my wake after I established the standard by which all the others are judged. However not all is over, I have now received 4 payments for Bearings after the last 10 were sold!!! So if I can attract a few more orders, then I might be in a position to commit to another batch it really depends on all those people out there who would like one but cannot get around to taking the final plunge! Also remember that the Ozzy dollar now represents good value.

How about you take some of the profit made from previous orders and use it to finance the manufacture of the new batch - that's how manufacture usually works! To be blunt, I'm not surprised people are unwilling to pay upfront for something that doesn't yet exist and may not even be made. In addition, some will be waiting months, and out of pocket, until you have sufficient numbers.

In response to ynwan's observations, My approach to soliciting prepayments has worked on three occasions in the past as the market for my Bearings has slowly fallen off. Indeed if I were making a full manufacturer's profit on costs, I would probably take the risk and make another 25. and probably have to keep many in stock for many months. However I am not prepared to do that and you are not forced to buy one!! Rather, I am catering to those who really appreciate what the Bearing can do for them and are able to understand my position.

I think the more expensive mods may become a little pointless with the new Technics TT coming to market. Quite different from the old SL1200 despite appearances.

You are absolutely correct stratmangler. When I started my upgrades some 5 years ago with the Bearing followed by the Base Plate and ETP Platter, I never assumed that the level of interest and quantities would ever justify any kind of quantity production predicated on sales in the high hundreds or thousands. That is why I spent some time locating a precision engineering supplier who would be willing to entertain small batch runs, all be it at a greater unit cost. In fact it really is a boutique activity catering to the relatively few owners of SL1200s out of the vast number of TTs which are no doubt still in use. As a single operative, I have absolutely no connection or activity with HiFi manufacturing or sales outside my SL1200 upgrades. The degree of profit available allows me to buy the odd case of good wine but would not support an "industry" venture. This is why it has always puzzled me as to why some of the more established suppliers would bother to chase sales of a lessor product against me,in a market size far smaller than they are normally active in, for what must be little profit! However I guess that is the mainstay of free enterprise.
