Would you say there is any one area in particular where commercial designs, below a certain price point, compromise themselves? I suppose power supplies might be an obvious one.
To a degree yes, however from my observations I would suggest that having a lot of sensitive electronics in close proximity to other sensitive areas in conversion area's, clocks and digital output stages and I/V sections. EMI/RFI also rear's its ugly head as well
Remember some of these products are not full sized boxes and space inside is at a premium, another observation would consistency of respectable parts and circuit board layout (space constraints again)
Do also think about what section of the market these parts are going to, who they are targeted at and price points.
This year you will finally see a response to the Devialet assault on the audio markets so this year some products that actually sound good, rather than just being a pretty box which is flexible.
The audio world is changing rapidly and the way people listen to music is changing rapidly too.
For those of you guys with memories that go back to the all in one Bush/Hitachi/Sanyo music centers with tape deck, radio and TT this is just a 21st century version of that.
If you stop the average Joe in the street they just wish for music at their fingertips and the ability to pipped into most rooms of the house, SQ is not the top of their list and these make up 90+% of the listening population.
That is why this inductry is so full of garden shed business carving a niche for themselves in a market which loves to be different imho
