This disc comprises five short chamber works by French composer Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). Poulenc had, and apparently still has, a mixed reputation, with his music being derided by his contemporaries for being regressive and lacking in seriousness, and with some pretty barbed reviews from current critics. And for sure, the works collected here lie at the lighter end of musical spectrum, with much silliness and humour, but they are also peppered with more sombre moments, and can move breezily from one to the other in a way that can be quite jarring. I picked this up in the latter half of last year, and have played it at least once a week since then. I enjoy how jolly it all is, and also find the more heartfelt moments quite moving. There's also something about the tone of these pieces which, for whatever reason, reminds me of being in Paris, which is always nice. The highlight for me is the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano. Discogs link ¦ Wikipedia linkThe spotify link below is for a five-disc collection of piano and chamber music, which includes the 'Chamber Music' set on the last disc - this begins at track 105. I also really like the third disc in this set, which runs from track 54 to track 90, and contains many short solo piano works, which are on the whole more serious. The other discs are worth a listen also. No numeric rating in the poll I'm afraid, since I would not understand the results!

Hmmm. Poulenc and Roge - I think I'm going to enjoy this...

Poulenc I'll give it a go I suspect I've not heard much of his chamber music. Listening to the clarinet sonata now -- hated the 1st mvt, the 2nd is really good! Can I vote twice? - 1 vote for I dislike it, 1 vote for I like it. I felt the same with the Stabat Mater, some good mvts, some awful. I shall attempt to persevere.

Oops! I foolishly neglected to add an entry in the poll for "I both like and dislike it". Mods?

Unfortunately, we can't add to a poll once it's started

I've never listened to any Poulenc before. He has a reputation as a bit of a lightweight according to Wikipedia. Will be interesting to hear something new.

His choral music isn't lightweight, and neither is the Organ Symphony.

I don't think it would be unfair to say that some of the works collected here are lightweight, but thankfully assessments of this sort have no bearing at all on whether I enjoy a piece or not.

Absolutely. I'm enjoying this collection, which I'm about half way through, so thanks to Pinch for posting. Whilst not quite up to the heights of the best Ravel piano work which has much more depth, I find these pieces very easy to listen to; full of breezy Gallic charm and whimsy ... an autumn weeked spent strolling around Paris or something like that.

I think I'm not generally a small scale person and, while charming and inventive, these are not really doing it for me. It's not about Poulenc as I don't really enjoy string quartets apart from Shostakovich, either. 3/5 for me.

Interesting - I find that with classical music I gravitate more towards smaller-scale works than I do big orchestral numbers.

I can't really explain it, Tom. Even with classical song, I gravitate towards, say, The Four Last Songs by Strauss with sympathetic orchestral accompaniment rather than many of the Schuberts with just piano.

The Debussy yes; I have them in this very nice set - I'm very keen on pretty much all his stuff. But I don't know the Ravel - will investigate

I've tried this a few times now. Some is really good, other parts make me cringe with embarrassment. Overall, I wouldn't choose to sit down and listen to a whole piece - the yucks are so appalling that they outweigh the yays for me. So I've given it an unfair but averaged out "4 dislike". Some individual movements would get a 1 from me, others a 5. I don't think I've come across another composer who I have such a love/hate relationship with!
