Exactly - balanced mains and balanced connections are two different things with the word 'balanced' in common.

Of course its to do with NVA, your original post was posted in the BMU thread and its aim was simply to incite and inflame the discussion. +1 for the mods for seeing that, splitting it away from the BMU thread and thus showing you up for who you really are. No matter how cleverly you think you are at dressing up your questions (or back tracking after being rumbled), you have more than enough previous with NVA kit for anybody the ability to use the grey matter between their ears to clearly see you have a cross forum vendetta against the manufacturer. Its as simple as that my friend...

Careful with the Ad Hominem rule please. Address pinkie's comments rather than pinkie himself.

We have split this so its not about any manufacturer. Lets keep it that way.

Pinky, what are you doing?
I'm not into having a go at people, so no ad-hominem intended, but the whole thing about the NVA BMU is that people can try it and either send it back or buy if they feel that way inclined. I DON'T make these and have never seen one wired inside, only separate top plate with sockets and the base with doped transformer and wires.
Making up a dummy with four sockets and a brick in place of a transformer may well make an improvement of sorts over a cheapo socket strip with potential for age-related corrosion internally? but balanced mains *should* do for the supply, similar things to balanced audio in cancelling certain kinds of mains-borne distortion out. The mains transformers in most audio gear probably do similar things? with their + and - supplies, I don't know, the BMU simply adding an extra 'layer' to the mains input and maybe having an effect on line source impedance too - possibly.
So, like I said above. The option to try it is there with NO compulsion to buy. I found a small positive benefit to having mine and missed it when I removed it to take back, so I bought the thing - and on my income it was a big purchase, as was the TIS I felt the same about. I didn't have to buy it, as the Doc was happy to continue to use it as a loaner and it took nearly a year to provide another for loan!
In your case Pinky, may I suggest you save hard for the Benchmark power amp you were bowled over with. Stereophile love it and it passed measurement tests with absolutely flying colours. It's not an NVA either, so it'll give you something else to concentrate on - and I'm NOT being sarcastic either!

So if you have very little DC on the mains, you don't need to worry about any fancy mains generators or balanced mains supplies?

I think it one of those things you have to try for yourself and see if it works for you

And why my home made 1000va transformer balanced mains unit is no longer in use.

I think it one of those things you have to try for yourself and see if it works for you +1... in exactly the same way that some cables, interconnects, valves or even isolation feet can make a difference. Trust the appendages on the side of your head and try not to get bogged down in the science

I would be far more interested in an amp that had balanced mains built into it. Dropping even £320 for an Airlink just doesn't appeal. Extra boxes just don't work for me I'm afraid, especially such ugly ones.

"How does Balance mains make a difference" It doesn't. Someone said earlier in the thread something like "do you think people go around reporting improvements which are non existent".... IMHO YES!!! With bells on! Most of the time! Equipment supports, mains cables, hi foo fuses, most of what is said about speaker cables and interconnects, BMU's, mains conditioners... all 99% emperors new clothes/expectation bias. Meanwhile most of the things that CAN make worthwhile improvements are totally ignored (outside of technical forums) because it's far more technical than unplugging/moving one "thing" and plugging in another.... Anyone noticed this strange coincidence that all the so called improvements can be fitted in minutes by someone with no technical knowledge? I wonder why that could be? I wonder if there are car forums where people with no mechanical aptitude to fit higher lift cams or bigger valves instead claim that the go faster stripes they just bought actually improve the top speed... Coat on...

Funny how people find the reporting of the truth insulting.... I guess the tailor who made the emperors new clothes was pretty pissed off when the little boy shouted "look, the emperors naked!"....

I think you are missing the point of the fairy tale - the King wanted the best and had to have the best, so the tailors decided to trick him. The butt (I choose my words carefully) of the child's comments is the King and his entourage, not the tailors. Having said that, I think the story is very applicable to people buying HiFi equipment.

So, if someone offers a "simple" improvement it can't be any good, because any fool can fit it. Conversely if someone else offers a complicated "upgrade" that can only be implemented by an "expert" then it's good? Did I get that right? Sounds like a plug to me, albeit a cheap 13A plug with no sign of Deoxit.

Absolutely not! The emperor and entourage are pissed off as they've been shown to be gullible and that "a fool and his money are easily parted"... it also illustrates how pride (and vanity) can come before a fall... the tailor equally so as he's not going to get away with that lucrative scam again.... In that kingdom anyway!

Jez, I tried, thought I could hear a subtle improvement IN MY SITUATION, took it out and over a couple of days missed it's presence, so put it back!
I agree - and shall be subjected to similar at the Harbeth factory sometime in the summer - that precise level matching removes a lot of so-called differences from the equation, but just sometimes, these subtle (in my case) differences can be beneficial and additive to musical satisfaction.
Yes, I raised my eyebrows to the fact that MartinT has a £4.5k mains regenerator in his system, but he's shown that his mains isn't very good and as he can afford it, I reckon his regenerator is probably the most important thing in his setup, as it would even give a little low powered Denon or Onkyo micro system a far better chance of working better, as their tiny transformers would have a basically 'clean' mains system to operate on and probably couldn't easily absorb any nasties coming in. The BMU is supposed to eliminate DC coming in the supply I'm told......
A BMU isn't complex and any difference it brings about should be easily measurable in terms of elimination or suppression of mains distortion artifacts, so in this case it's not all 'foo' in my opinion and experience. Seriously, whatever you think of the Doc as a person, I can assure you he wouldn't be arsed to make the things if he didn't think that SOME improvement couldn't be heard.
I'm now shilling this bloody brand and I apologise for appearing to do so. The BMU doesn't appeal? Don't bother to try one and CERTAINLY don't troll subjects about which you know nothing and show no signs of wanting to learn!
