I love the music and the gear. Two separate but mutually supporting hobbies. I agree completely.

I've made most of my kit, either from scratch the horns etc or kit stuff, like the Diyaudio Dac/DSP/XO gismo. I'm not really attached to it cos of that though. Bits will get swapped out if I think they can be bettered along the way. I am attached to the sound it makes - not heard a system overall I like better, that I could house / afford. I'm sure better sounds exist but at what cost? I've also learnt so much along the way. Wouldn't have done that getting my cheque book out.

Two separate but mutually supporting hobbies. I think that's the fundamental difference for me, I have never considered my love of music a hobby. It really is all about the music for me, I find the whole gear thing distracting/time consuming and potentially counter productive which can lead to dissatisfaction, chasing something that many never find. Horses for courses mind you, I do have hobbies, but music isn't one of them - it's part of my DNA. Mind you I don't seem to listen to music 'properly' so maybe that's why Not sure about that one Chris, I am now leaning toward selling everything as it's going to be expensive to store everything and in the long run not economically viable. I'm going out with just 3 x 30kg suitcases, so that doesn't leave much room for Hi-Fi! Not sure when I'll be back either, could possibly be away from these shores for a few years. I quite like the idea of having a small Airbnb on Gozo when I'm done with China - who knows what path I will follow?

On what basis do you assume superiority over others in terms of loving your music more than others do? And why would you even wish to do so?

It's not meant to Jerry at all, far from it - I think you may have missed another post elsewhere about listening properly and hence the smilie. It's my often misunderstood sense of humour. I accept I'm the odd one out here, I just don't get the gear chasing bit and music isn't a hobby to me. As I said horses for courses, it doesn't mean I think I love music more than others, I just seem to think of it differently and enjoy it differently - does that make me superior? Not in my book, I think you mistook my meaning and why would it make me superior - I'm surprised you'd think that. I'm just not into Hi-Fi like you guys are, that's all. Don't forget I am talking from my perspective and just explaining to the OP that I don't get emotionally attached to the gear, but I do the music.
You have completely misconstrued what I was trying to convey - we are all very different Jerry. That's the fecking problem with forums, unless you know the person and how they tick, it's easy to get the wrong impression from a few typed sentences, especially if it's an opposing view.

I often describe music is like coming back home to me. It does not matter how shit or great my day has been music is what I come home too

I think maybe people are getting hung up on 'hobby' or 'passion' or even 'DNA'. I feel the same about all of them and might use different expressions depending on who I'm with.
I was talking only yesterday with a table full of colleagues about my passion. Not a single one of them understood, despite having expensive cars, bikes and other pursuits. It's that lack of understanding that music can be so important that tells me I'm different. Not superior, of course, but it's a lonely path we tread.

That's it Martin, not one of my last work colleagues had any sort of grasp of how important music is to me, I know I am certainly very different, not just music either. And when it comes to Hi-Fi, I'm clearly very different again to the majority here and on AoS. It does seem to irk some folk when I say it's only the music I care about - Suum cuique ain't it and it's doesn't help that I'm slightly mad, with a very warped sense of humour! Tell me about treading lonely paths too . . . . haha, but not so much lonely though, alone yes but rarely lonely Now do you want those two IKEA Benno towers Martin before I put them on Gumtree?

Ooh, you have more? Yes please, it's also an excuse to meet up and buy you a beer before you bugger off into the horizon

Thing about spending money is that it is 'normal' to spend £1000s on cars, £100s or £1000s on holidays, £100s or even £1000s a year on eating out, £100s possibly £1000s a year on clothes plus other 'normal' things like iPhones, iPads .... What is not 'normal' is spending it to make the music sound better. Most or all of us here are therefore not 'normal'

I have no issue as being seen as different due to my passion With music I never really feel lonely I guess for me finding like minded people is one of the reasons why I hang out on forums

Nothing wrong with being different, No one more different to others than me. I reckon you are more 'uniquely original' André - far more interesting than just different

I would say I love components of my Hifi system. For instance, I love the Exposure amplifiers, probably because I still think that John Farlowe era Exposure were surprisingly good… also because they have been in my family since 1994 so I have some sentimental attachment.
I used to love my Epos ES-14's, whereas I'd say I like the Focal's very much, maybe it is a time thing as I only upgraded the system this year.
Although I would say I love the Naim NDX, it has made soooooo much difference to my system and is easily my primary source now, eclipsing the CDX2 which I am somewhat surprised about and I have only had the NDX for a couple of months.
I love my Grado PS-500's, although to be honest they were the primary reason why I knew I had to upgrade my main system because with the PS-500's, Squeezbox Classic and Beresford DAC the sound quality was bettering my main system by some margin in terms of detail and overall enjoyment. By getting the NDX I was able to upgrade the headphone system also which has just made them sound better.
