As previously hinted at, I thought I'd be cheeky and take 2 slots in "my" month of classical album choice. -- there's enough great classical music to go around, after all. So after the adventurous and perhaps a little challenging intro to the music of Bohislav Martinu, I thought I'd let you off more easily this time and present a work that while being fairly obscure is just plain fun to listen to! Kabalevsky is not exactly a household name, but his music is deeply founded in the wonderful melodies of Russian folk tunes. And by golly, you get them in abundance in his 1st cello concerto. Just relax and enjoy. He was broadly contemporary with Shostakovich, but his musical language harks back to a previous era and is much more accessible. and on TIDAL ... listen.tidal.com/album/12072450Lots of good versions, and that Naxos is as good as any (and probably better than most). And on YouTube this is a nice performance (each mvt is presented separately)... and the pretty young lady cellist doesn't do any harm either! ... Some background on Kabalevsky -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitry_Kabalevsky... there is also a fine violin concerto, chamber music and solo piano music, and his symphonies are well worth exploring, too.

Wow, a 2 for 1 from Jerry!
I'm a sucker for some good old-fashioned Russian romanticism... Loved listening to the YouTube version whilst I wait for car service. I thought the cellist performance was superb too... Loved the 3rd movement climax.
Did you see a young President Putin on violin?? I will certainly explore the other works. Thanks Jerry.

For a more challenging listen, the 2nd cello concerto is well worth a go. It kind of reminds me of Shostakovich's 2nd cello concerto.

Yes it's new for me. I will buy the Yo-Yo Ma vinyl...
Maybe it's Putin's twin violin playing brother... LOL

As you probably guessed you had me at "Cello" Jerry. I've got this by Yo-Yo Ma with Eugene Ormandy and The Philidelphia Orchestra and I find it wonderfully "playful" unlike a lot of "The Cello is the instrument of DOOM and MISERY" concerti. I've also got Cello Concerto No.2 played by Stephen Isserlis with the same orchestra and conductor.

I have an "Album Choice" slot coming up in February, be prepared for 28 albums. Next year is a leap year you can have 29 -- I'll see how this one goes, I might sneak another in around the 20th

Yup, Bernie the bolt - a gameshow classic! Bob Monkhouse was class act - even a bit of politics about the power cuts during the intro ...

Bernie (there were actually 3 Bernies) took over from Heinz who was the original "armourer" when the show was first imported from Germany. Jackie Rae was the original host. All right then, I am old!

Back to the Kabelevsky. A very interesting mix of influences there: I can hear touches of Shostakovich but also some of the Romantics such as Elgar. Cello has never been my favourite solo instrument so it takes something to catch my attention (like the Dvorak played by Tortelier). I've found this enjoyable but I can't hand on heart say that I'll be rushing to buy it.
Thanks for introducing something new to us, I'll be looking out for his violin concerto and some orchestral music. If you have any that are a must-listen, do please tell us!
