The 95 yr old company was wound up today, with debts of over a billion dolllars. Some of the stores in the US will continue to trade under different owners but I think all of the UK ones are done by now. The new owners of the surviving shops, General Wireless are a company formed by Standard General who injected a heap of cash into the company a while back in an attempt to help them out. In the sale of assets, General Wireless used the debt as their bid and won in preference to some higher bidders who were going to liquidate the stock, sell the property and sack the staff.

Sad, but they were always better in the US than over here. They also adopted strange marketing techniques like pricing speakers singly.
However, I shall treasure my Radio Shack digital sound pressure level meter even more now.

Sad indeed. Let's hope the remainder keep going and make some dough
I too have their DB meter

I don't think they've been around in the U.K. for a long time, although there still seems to be an online company with the same name.
My first computer was a Tandy - cassette drive, Black and white monitor with upper case text only, no graphics.

I was in the Lancaster branch of Tandy just a few months ago. Last time I walked past, it was closed up.

I used to get all of the components for building my guitar pedals at Tandy. Ah, those heady days of 555 timers and 741 amp ICs.

Down to my last five pairs of pro lx5 ribbon hybrids now .. . . . . One of the best small, cheapish speakers I've heard.

I honestly thought they disappeared years ago. I also have fond memories of going into Tandy as a kid. It was so full of interesting stuff, most of which was beyond my understanding back then. Actually a lot of it probably still is.

It was a strange kind of purchase for Dunston (Carphone Warehouse), unless he wanted the shop frontage.

Not surprised. He is single-minded, that's for sure. I used to work with him at NEC when he left to start up the company. Phones were a real growth market then.

Had a NEC 9A back then ! I remember them well. I was one of the first to get a car phone installation, and must have spent a fortune having a conf call while driving in London with a Japanese colleague while he was driving in Tokyo!

Tandy/Radio Shack sold a load of crap, but also some absolute gems. They did a version of the Auratone sound cubes that was excellent and the Minimus 7 speakers are still a favourite. I also still have six of their PZM mics, a very easy mod makes the balanced and phantom powered. It was also a good place for tools and components. Real shame they have gone. Of couse I have the SPL metet too I aldo have the original analogue version.

Remember buying interconnects from them after Jimmy Hughes (or was it Alvin Gold?) said back in the day about how good they were.
Tandy "Gold" interconnects, about £15 if I remember right, sounded great too. Would love to hear a pair now to compare against the usual suspects!
