Well having waited months to get myself an arm worthy of mounting Dom's cartridge on (the SME V is impossible for various reasons) and a standard el cheapo arm would not be worthy for what I consider one of the best cartridges ever made (well for me anyway) my silver wired Jelco finally arrived today. Its a brand new design with low slung counterweight and even the headshell is wired with silver (which I won't need anyway) as I also bought myself a rosewood and magnesium headshell to use with the arm. Of course mounting it on my Techie is the best place for it as Mike sent me a special edition heavy platter which is one of a kind he tells me so the extra height won't matter as the Jelco will be used with one of Hugo's new design collars. Only issue now I need to find an armboard which I know is somewhere in Brook Towers but where who knows! So the SME V is off and the new kid on the block will soon be on. Patience wearing thin as I don't like faffing about setting TT's up, and Dom lives too far away! I will take some actual pics when she is up and running, another glass of red beckons!

Nice! It's pretty much the same c/w as on my Ortofon arm. Should sound fab! Marco.

Marco - the Ortofon arm is made by Jelco, which explains the similarities (for those who don't know).
David - what is "Dom's cartridge"? What type and why can it not be mounted in an SME?

If the c/w on David's arm is as heavy as the one on mine, then in order to optimise set-up, he'll have to balance it out at the other end with a rather heavy cartridge and headshell combo, or there may be challenges in terms of achieving correct VTF. As for Dom's cartridge, the DH1, you must've missed my review of it on AoS: theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?30300-Gathering-at-NWA&p=523059#post523059It's rather tasty! Marco.

I did miss that, sounds interesting. However, I'm not in the market for a £5k cartridge

The SME V is such a small headshell which leaves no room to mount many cartridges, its a bit sterile too TBH (The SME) I only put it on the Techy until the Jelco arrived.

Yes, I agree that the SME sounds a little sterile (I used to have an SME IV).

The tapered tube SMEs are a good match with their own turntables, Michells and Oracles and apart from those three brands, you're usually better off with a different option, I reckon.

However, I'm not in the market for a £5k cartridge £5K for a cartridge . . . that's more than my entire system!!! Does it give 5K's worth I pleasure though? I once met a lady who I might have paid 5K for, but not a cartridge

Does it give 5K's worth I pleasure though? It depends where you insert it Marco.

Then it meets the value criteria for you, David, which is fair enough.

Can't see the picture ? BTW £5K for a cartridge is not excessive, I have sold at least three at £8,850 to happy customers. Dave

I didn't think it excessive Dave (back to the concept of value), but it's not a sum I'm prepared to pay, especially as my Shelter gives about 95% that of some very expensive cartridges I've heard in the past.

I agree, but for those with $1bn it's not much at all ! (in fact he has two of them, one as a spare)
Can you see David's picture under "The excitement begins...." ? I can't on Explorer or Chrome ?
